PURPOSE: Our mission is to promote scholarship, research, professionalism, leadership, advocacy, and excellence in counseling, and to recognize high attainment in the pursuit of academic and clinical excellence in the profession of counseling and counselor education.

ELIGIBILITY: Graduate students invited to membership must have a minimum 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale after completing at least one full academic term (or its equivalent in hours) of graduate preparation in counselor education and be recommended by the chapter as suited for such recognition. Professionals invited to membership must meet all the same requirements as student members including a 3.5 GPA or better on all graduate work and have their primary career identity as a professional counselor as evident, for example, by their highest degree being in counselor education and their professional license or certification as a counselor.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES: There are a variety of activities related to service, leadership, and scholarship at chapter, regional, and international levels. The annual meeting is an occasion of leadership training, scholarly presentations, and awards for both members and chapters. CSI helps to sponsor ten (10) fellowships to assist emerging leaders to attend its annual meeting and the American Counseling Association conference. From among the ten fellows, two (2) are chosen as interns to work with CSI and leaders in the profession throughout the year.

CSI has added webinars to its services and beenfits to chapters and members including those with free continuing education (CEs) to members who complete the requirements for participation. These are proving to be very popular and effective in helping to meet the mission of the Society.

CSI publishes the Exemplar, its primary mechanism for reaching membership with professional topics as well as society news and announcements. The CSI website ( is designed to serve members, chapters, and leaders in the profession through its many downloadable features including all past issues of the Exemplar. Chapter Faculty Advisors, for example, may approve new members and download lists of their chapter members using our online Member Management System.

Chapters also receive significant financial support for their activities through rebates for each of their active members. Over $140,000 was distributed to active chapters in the past year. In addition, CSI pays up to half of the expenses for our Scholars, Academy of Leaders, and officers (past and present) to speak at CSI chapter initiations. All speakers donate their time to the Society.
